I want to be PM because I believe in our country

KEIR STARMER ON AMBITION FOR 2024

KEIR Starmer today vows to make Labour the party of the economy as he sets out his battle plan for the New Year.

The Labour leader will deliver a major speech in January on his vision to “recover and rebuild” the country in the wake of the pandemic.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Sir Keir said: “Labour needs to regain credibility, trust and votes across all parts of the country.

“We’re doing incredible things in terms of science and technology and education, businesses… we’ve got innovators everywhere.

“I want to be PM because I believe in our country and the triple failure... is holding our country back.”

The “triple failure” he refers to is by Boris Johnson, who has led Britain to end 2020 with the highest death toll in Europe, the worst economic outlook of major economies and, potentially, a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Starmer added: “That is absolutely holding our country back. These are not minor failures, these are fundamental failures. His serial incompetence is holding us back.”

The Labour leader, who took over in April, has had to deal with internal battles since stripping ex- leader Jeremy Corbyn of the whip over his response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s investigation into anti-Semitism within Labour.

But he said winning the 2024 general election was the “absolute priority” for Labour now.

He said: “The Labour party was formed to change life for the better. You can’t do that in Opposition. Everything we do has to be tested against the prospect of winning in 2024.” His January speech will also set out policies on violent crime, Government waste and Britain’s place in the world in the coming months.

Mr Starmer, who will spend Christmas in London, also reflected on his family’s year. He said: “Like many, it’s been difficult for us. In the middle of the leadership campaign, my wife lost her mother so I absolutely feel for those families that have lost someone in this year.”

The Mirror interviewed Mr Starmer from his home over Zoom. He is self-isolating until Monday as a team member tested Covid positive.

TODAY marks a year since the general election and only one party can look back at the last 12 months with pride.

Under Keir Starmer the fortunes of Labour have been turned around and they are once again looking like a government in waiting.

By contrast, Boris Johnson has shown the difference between being good at campaigning and good at governing.

His first year has been a history of U-turns, missed opportunities and incompetence.

The UK has suffered one of the highest death tolls from Covid and the deepest recession.

Key election promises, such as the reform of social care, have been allowed to gather dust.

Child poverty is on the rise, unemployment is increasing and growth has stalled.

No amount of bluster by the Prime Minister can disguise how poorly he has performed.
