MARCUS Rashford says “only togetherness” will lead to longterm change for those in need.

The campaigning Manchester United star said seeing the nation come together in the October half-term holidays to help feed schoolkids was “probably my proudest moment” of 2020.

Rashford, 23, told The Big Issue: “At a time we were appearing to be somewhat divided, everything was put aside to protect our most vulnerable children.

“Small businesses, who had not earnt a penny this year, reopened their kitchens knowing they would be running at an even greater loss, football put rivalry aside, people opened up their arms and welcomed people in. “It was really touching.”

The England ace said we can all play a role in combating child food poverty even if it is just a kind word or gesture.

He said: “We all have a responsibility to protect our vulnerable as it could be

Rashford’s campaign began in June, after the Government refused vouchers over the summer holidays to feed the 1.3 million children in England given free school meals in term time.

His campaign led to the Government allowing children to claim free meals during the summer holidays.

He then called for free meals over the October half-term, with more than a million people signing his petition.

The Government refused before again climbing down and pledging to spend more than £ 400million to support poor children and their families in England until the end of March.

Rashford also offered encouragement to Big Issue vendors who have faced financial and emotional hardship.

“It will get better. It will get easier. However big or small, we all play a role in society, and our voices matter.”
