‘HE’LL BATTLE VARD TO KEEP GOLDEN BOOT’

- BY JAMES NURSEY

BRENDAN RODGERS has warned Harry Kane and Heung-min Son that Jamie Vardy will not give up the Golden Boot without a huge fight.

Leicester striker Vardy topped the goalscoring charts last term with 23 Premier League goals.

This season he has 10 already but is behind Spurs ace Son, who is joint top with 11.

Kane (with Son, right) has nine ahead of Leicester’s trip tomorrow to Tottenham.

Vardy turns

34 next month but Rodgers reckons the frontman is still determined to finish top of the charts.

The Foxes boss said: “Son and Kane up front are two of the best players in European football in terms of their qualities.

“Son is someone who just gets better and better and is one of their leading players.

“Harry is a fantastic player and I have a big admiration for the career he has had.

“He is a wonderful goalscorer and has great ability finishing 25-30 yards out.

“They are both big talents and you have to keep an eye on them.

“The league is full of fantastic strikers. But I am very fortunate here to have Jamie, who is one of the top ones and has proven that over a number of years.

“Jamie is a goalscorer and, in every game, he wants to play and wants to score.

“He was the oldest Golden Boot winner in the history of the Premier League, which is an incredible achievement.

“But he is equally as hungry this year.

“You see how he has started and the goals he has got.

“If he can stay fit and available for the season, then I am pretty sure he will be up there or thereabouts.”

Rodgers (with Vardy, top) is wary of Spurs’ threat after working under boss Jose Mourinho during his first reign at Chelsea.

He feels the Special One is close to the peak of his powers that he displayed at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007.

Rodgers added: “Looking at him now is the first time in a long time I am seeing the Jose I knew at Chelsea.

“I see a guy who really believes he has the tools in his team for what he wants to do.

“They look like Jose’s team, they are a group of men who work hard. They have clearly bought into the way he is working.”
