NO.1 SANCHEZ WALKS TALL

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

GRAHAM POTTER has claimed the sky is the limit for giant goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and confirmed Maty Ryan is free to leave Brighton.

The Seagulls boss (above) dropped Aussie Ryan at Fulham in midweek and saw Sanchez keep a clean sheet in only his second Premier League start.

The 23-year-old Spaniard is 6ft 6in tall – six inches taller than Ryan – and has the physical presence to dominate his penalty area.

And Sanchez, who joined Brighton as a 15-year-old and has spent loan spells in the EFL with Forest Green and Rochdale, will now make his home debut against winless Sheffield United tomorrow.

“Rob is a young, confident guy, he is ambitious and has huge potential,” said Potter. “He is top end. He is very, very exciting and has all the attributes you need to be a top goalkeeper.

“What he is lacking is experience. So until he gets that, it is just potential, and we have to keep helping him. He is a relaxed, calm fella with a nice accent.”

Ryan, 28, joined from Valencia in 2017, and played all 38 Premier League matches last season. But Potter said he would not stand in the way of a January transfer.

“You have got to be respectful to the professional and his career, family and situation,” added Potter.

“On the one hand, we are going to give Rob a chance – him and Jason Steele have done well. We’re going to give them that time.

“At the same time, you know the situation for Maty might be he wants to be somewhere he is more able to play.

“Out of respect for Maty, you have got to give him the freedom to do that. It’s down to Maty and the club.”
