Racing car track toy Scalextric got boost

LOCKDOWN living has changed the nation as comfy slippers and honey drizzlers are in and killer heels and suitcases are out.

Shoppers have adapted to the new normal by ditching expensive handbags and make-up once essential for work and snapping up new TVs and toys like Scalextric, a report indicates.

Simon Coble, trading director at John Lewis, said: “There’s no question 2020 will be remembered as the year that changed everything – how we shop, live, socialise and work.”

The retailer’s Shop Live Look report found lives have been inspired by the “Netflix effect”. Homes became cinemas, with sales of TVs up 45% since March.

Sales of chintzy curtains like those in The Crown were up by 20% and The Queen’s Gambit starring Anya Taylor

Joy has sent sales of chess sets rocketing by 121%. And demand for berets increased by 65%, possibly helped by Emily in Paris, starring Lily Collins. Online shopping almost doubled to 70% of John Lewis sales, with 8pm to 10pm the most popular. With no pressure to dress up for work, sales of heels tumbled by 64%, clutch bags were down by 56% and lipstick by 54% – while demand for slippers leapt by 48%. Women still dressed to thrill under their joggers and hoodies, treating themselves to sexy undies. Workers missing coffee to go invested in machines, with sales rising by 22%. Honey drizzlers also flew off shelves, unlike ironing boards, for which demand fell by 26%. And as we gave up on holidays, sales of suitcases slumped by 69%.
