Faffing exposes vile Tory greed

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

It is truly a national disgrace that Unicef is stepping in to provide support for Britain’s hungry children (Mirror, December 17).

This is a consequence of a decade of Tory austerity. When I left the UK to live in Maine, US, in 2011 there were no food banks. When I returned in 2013 there were hundreds. It happened virtually overnight all due Tory policies that targeted the poor and vulnerable while the rich prospered.

After the war the country pulled together and children like myself didn’t go hungry. But now Britain is bitterly divided and likely to remain so for decades to come.

Never have initiatives such as the one backed by Unicef in South London and your own Save a Kid’s Christmas appeal been more needed. The Tories have taken us back to Dickensian times.

“Please, Boris, can I have some more? My bowl is empty.”

How dare pompous Tory prig Jacob Rees-Mogg say Unicef should be ashamed for helping feed hungry British children (Mirror, December 18). He accused the UN of “faffing around” in England. Thank goodness someone is because this Government’s “faffing” is creating havoc and the very poorest are paying the price. Rees-Mogg doesn’t live in the real world. He is a disgrace. Thank heavens for Unicef helping. Wendy Potter Wolverhampton

Sneering Jacob ReesMogg has accused Unicef of “playing politics” for helping to provide meals for hungry kids in London. Yet he and his Tories voted to deny funds to feed our poorest children during the holidays and were only shamed into a U- turn by Marcus Rashford.

They ought to be ashamed that Unicef felt it was necessary to “faff around” here in the UK.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, we find out Dominic Cummings got a 40% pay rise before he left No10 (Mirror, Dec 16).

Then we read Unicef is funding a programme to feed hungry kids.

The levels of poverty in this country are heartbreaking. Families are desperate and Covid has only made things worse. Boris Johnson and his multi-millionaire Chancellor Rishi Sunak don’t have any idea what it means to struggle.

The poorest are begging him to extend the extra £20 Universal Credit payment. We really need a Labour government and I don’t think th we can wait until 2024. 2 Lorraine L Thorton, Poole, Dorset D

In November Boris J Johnson promised an e extra £16billion would b be spent on the military. A month later, Unicef, for the first time in its 70-year history, is giving aid to the UK to alleviate the “domestic emergency” of child hunger. It has been revealed 2.4 million children are living in food insecure households in the UK in 2020.

Surely, it’s time to build a world where the Government spends billions to ensure there is not one hungry child in the UK?

Sasha Simic, North London

Yet another Tory first. In 2019 a UN report revealed record levels of poverty in the UK, now Unicef steps in to feed hungry children.

We’ve had 10 years of austerity hitting the poorest and tax cuts for millionaires. In fact the rich have never had it better, while the poor continue to suffer.

Frank Keys, Wilbarston, Northants
