QUICK-FIRE JACK CAN’T STOP JUDDERNAUT

- BY HECTOR NUNNS

JUDD TRUMP claimed a 20th ranking title last night after holding off a thrilling Jack Lisowski fightback in the World Grand Prix final.

The Juddernaut (right) made it 13 major trophies in the last 26 months to finish 2020 in style – holding the trophy in the arena in Milton Keynes after a 10-7 victory.

World No.1 Trump pocketed the £100,000 top prize but not without a major scare against close pal and long-time practice partner Lisowski, who was chasing a breakthrough success.

Trump led 7-2 but the world No.15 closed to 7-6 and then 8-7 – however that was as near as he got. The in-form Trump has now already won three titles this term, and been in two other finals.

And by making it 20 ranking wins he edged clear of Neil Robertson and Mark Selby into sixth place on the all-time list.

That puts the 31-year-old behind only Ronnie O’Sullivan on 37, Stephen Hendry (36), John Higgins (30), Steve Davis (28), and Mark Williams (22).

Despite his huge talent Lisowski, 29, has now lost all four ranking finals in which he has appeared. And he served up errors as Trump stormed to a 6-2 lead after the first session helped by breaks of 75, 122, 75 and 64.

When that became 7-2 it looked all over. But in a flash Lisowski made it 7-6 with breaks of 99, 112, 87 and 95 – with Trump allowed just nine points in four frames.

The next two were shared after Trump stopped the rot – and after a 78 put him on the brink he closed out the contest in frame 17.
