‘MINGING’ BEES HAVE TO FLOWER
TIM FLOWERS has vowed to sort out Barnet’s “minging” defence after Dorking Wanderers won 3-1 to dump them out of the FA Trophy.
The former England goalkeeper (above) has replaced Peter Beadle, who was sacked after last week’s 6-0 humiliation at Chesterfield.
Flowers, in his first game in charge, saw James McShane, Jason Prior and Luke Moore net for the National League South hosts.
Ben Fox scored on his Bees debut to level – but was then sent off for a bad challenge.
Flowers, who won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1995, made it clear he expected better defending in future.
He said: “I wanted them to give 100 per cent for this football club and I believe they did that – they worked their socks off.
“But the quality of goals we concede is minging. It’s an Achilles heel, so that’s first port of call.”
Wrexham were the other big-name National League casualties, knocked out 6-5 on penalties by Leamington.
Brakes goalkeeper Jack Weaver saved Anthony Jeffrey’s kick to secure victory for the National League North side after the tie ended 0-0 in normal time.
Wrexham boss Dean Keates said: “For us it was an opportunity to get the minutes up on players.
“I didn’t have a look at the opposition at all because there was more than enough quality out there to win a football match.”
Chesterfield avoided a similar exit after they were also held to a goalless draw at home to a National League North side but the Spireites beat Brackley Town 4-3 in the shoot-out.
