JOSH TAKES FLUFF WITH THE SMOOTH

- BY ROSS HEPPENSTALL

JOSH WINDASS reckons he can score the goals to save Sheffield Wednesday from relegation despite fluffing his lines again in this priceless victory.

Owls manager Tony Pulis finally secured his first win since taking charge after Tom Lees headed home Barry Bannan’s free-kick in the 67th minute.

Wasteful Windass, who missed a series of chances, should have made the game safe late on but fired straight at Coventry goalkeeper Ben Wilson.

The former Rangers front-man said: “I had a few chances which I usually take but it wasn’t my day in front of goal. I’ve been moaning I haven’t been getting any chances and here I did but didn’t put any away. Even at half-time I’d missed a couple and I’d been thinking ‘get the next one.’

“The one at the end, I had loads of time. I really don’t know what was going through my mind but the lads dug me out and we got the win, so that was all that mattered.”

The result lifted Wednesday off the foot of the Championship table and ended a dismal ninematch winless streak.

Their recent form has not been helped by an ongoing issue with the non-payment of player wages.

“It’s like anything, if you lose, people will say it is affecting you and if you win, it’s not. I’m just here to play football and score goals,” said Windass (above).

Defeat ended Coventry’s eightmatch unbeaten run and their 22-year-old midfielder Ben Sheaf said: “We just have to go on another run now.

“We have done it once and we can definitely do it again.”
