A GRANDMOTHER has admitted she threw up after discovering she had scooped a £3.8million Lotto jackpot win.

Retired social services worker Diane Bate, 70, and husband Michael had to get their granddaughter to double check the numbers as they were worried it was a hoax.

Diane said: “I checked my ticket early on Sunday morning using the National Lottery app when it made a funny sound.

“I looked at the amount and couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought, ‘Surely that can’t be right?’ The most I’ve won before is £100.

“I was in total disbelief so I woke Michael up to check the ticket – he wasn’t happy but we’ve been married 52 years so he soon got over it. I still didn’t believe it, so I checked it with my granddaughter.

“I must have checked the numbers about six times before I started to believe it was real. At that point, I was physically sick.”

She added: “My granddaughters played a trick on me once and convinced me that I had won

£1,000 on the bingo, which nearly gave me a heart attack.

“But the feeling of winning the lottery doesn’t even compare to that – I am on cloud nine.”

When her massive win finally started to sink in, Diane, from

Rhyl, North Wales, cooked dinner in a daze and called her loved ones to tell them the news.

She said: “My daughter thought

I was kidding. I called my grandson and he didn’t believe me either so, as part of our support bubble, he rushed round to check the ticket.”

But despite her newfound wealth, Diane is planning a normal Christmas with Michael, a retired HGV driver.

She said: “We want to buy a bigger house locally as we love the area but we don’t want a mansion Her numbers or anything flashy. The US is our favourite destination so we would love to go back as soon as it’s safe. Canada is on the bucket list too, and we’ve got a daughter who lives in Australia. We will be treating ourselves to first-class flights.

“One of our granddaughters is getting married in the US in January. We aren’t able to attend due to Covid, but we can help give her an amazing wedding.

“It’s a real pick-me-up. Being able to help out our family brings us so much happiness – it isn’t just a win for me, it’s a win for them too.”

Diane’s December 12 ticket was bought at her local ASDA.
