THE lonely widower who refused a vegetarian’s offer to have Christmas dinner with him will eat alone, after finding no suitable taker.

Tony Williams decided to continue his search for a “cultured and humorous” companion rather than “have lettuce” for his festive meal tomorrow.

But despite several replies advert, he’s found no one to his liking. The 75-year-old, whose wife Jo died of cancer in May, had placed cards around the town where he lives, offering a “sumptuous feast, fine wines and good conversation”.

Tony said: “I did try to see if there was someone in the same situation as me who would provide good company but I couldn’t find anyone.

“I had about five or six offers. Some were very tentative, some were dependent on if they had plans to go somewhere else, some were hedging to his their bets, I think. One was a lady who was a vegetarian but I wasn’t interested. I didn’t fancy having a lettuce for Christmas dinner.

“I know a lot of vegetarians who enjoy their food, but I don’t intend to eat a nut cutlet. It’s not really what I was looking for. Instead I’m going to treat myself to a nice steak and a superb bottle of wine.”

Tony, of Alton, Hants, said he did chat to the woman for an hour on the phone, but insisted the idea of sharing Christmas dinner with a vegetarian was “a non- starter”. After retired legal secretary Jo died of pancreatic cancer, Tony told how he had lost his “soulmate” and feared spending Christmas alone for the first time. But the former physicist also rejected another woman’s offer who he claimed bored him so much on the phone he decided her company “would make me more depressed than spending it alone”.
