Dithering made this crisis worse

- FIONA PARKER Edited by

We all know the public’s trust in this Tory Government is at an all-time low but we must follow the experts’ advice for our protection and that of our loved ones.

The older generation went without Christmas due to rationing in the war years and thereafter, so just for one moment think about everything they sacrificed.

Unfortunately, too many people are struggling for the basics – so thank goodness for food banks, Marcus Rashford’s campaign to help hungry children and Captain Tom Moore’s NHS fundraising.

The Tories are responsible for the predicament this week, with roads in Kent blocked with lorries. And all because people put their trust in Boris Johnson who is incapable of governing in a crisis.

There should be a vote of no confidence in him and his ministers to save the country from ruin. Reg Barrett, Southminster, Essex

The number of people infected in London and the South East grew alarmingly for two reasons. Firstly, it was due to the new variant of the virus, and secondly because there were many people out shopping after we came out of the second lockdown. The furore about the new variant being out of control panicked the French and other countries into cutting links with us. And it is due to Johnson and Hancock ramping up fears to cover their error of leaving London in Tier 2 and for not cancelling Christmas sooner.

Bumbling Boris Johnson is making the coronavirus crisis worse. The Government’s handling of it has been diabolical from day one and now our European friends and neighbours are closing their borders to us.

Like all Johnson’s dealings, his dithering has cost us dearly and the decision to cancel Christmas came too late. Meanwhile, the death toll from this awful virus keeps rising. Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire

The ban on freight coming into France and on travel to many countries was a direct consequence of this Government’s appalling handling of the crisis.

Due to Johnson’s dithering, lateness in taking big decisions and his refusal to listen to experts, the new strain of the virus is now running wild and other countries, understandably, are worried about it getting a hold on their soil.

In my view, he is guilty of gross negligence and endangering lives. A Taylor

Our European neighbours and other countries did the sensible thing banning British travellers. If

only Boris had closed our borders at the beginning of the pandemic, we would not be in the mess we face now.

As an island we were in a better position to protect ourselves against the virus.

When is someone going to take charge, listen to the medics and get us out of this nightmare? Moira Ward, Fareham, Hants

I wish we could get this clueless Government out before 2024.

They change their minds from one day to the next and leave vital decisions until the last possible minute. They are playing with people’s lives.

Get them out – this is no way to run a government. Paul Furlong, Belvedere, Kent

If people think the backlog of trucks we have seen in Kent is bad, remember this is before the full force of Brexit kicks in.

If supply chains are disrupted and there are shortages of certain goods, I hope the public will lay the blame squarely where it belongs – with Boris Johnson’s shambolic Government.
