Ancelotti writes off title hopes but sets sights on Everton back in Europe

- BY SIMON BIRD @SimonBird_

CARLO ANCELOTTI has dismissed Everton’s chances of lifting the title this season even though they are breathing down the neck of Liverpool.

The Italian coach has praised his squad’s “ambitions” but reckons it is unrealistic for them to keep pace at the summit. But Ancelotti IS bidding to take Everton back to Europe this season.

They face a huge test of their credentials tonight against Manchester City on the back of four top-flights wins in a row. But the Blues have conceded just one goal in recent wins against Sheffield United, Arsenal, Leicester and Chelsea, and Pep Guardiola’s men will need all their invention to break them down.

Ancelotti said: “Realistically no, we are not contenders for the title.

“Our target doesn’t change. There is a lot of competition in the Premier League, a lot of fantastic teams.

“We are happy to be second now but our target is to reach a European position. We want to play in Europe next season and that doesn’t change.

“In one year we have progressed really well. The team has a good spirit and the players are motivated. We have made some good signings. The progress is really good.”

The former AC Milan boss said even defeat of Manchester City would not change his opinion. “If we beat Man City it will be the same. We have to be honest,” he said.

“We are not at the same level as these teams. We want to be as soon as possible. We are working to be there. But you ask me today and I have to be honest.” Gylfi Sigurdsson’s late goal snatched a 1- 0 win at Sheffield United on Saturday as Everton shrugged off the absences of James Rodriguez and striker Richarlison.

Ancelotti (right) added: “I’m pleased. It was a victory for the spirit and determination of the team.

“We have to be patient. The squad has ambition and is really motivated. We had three come off the bench and all helped us to win the game.”

Ancelotti is delighted with Everton’s away form this term and said after the victory at Bramall Lane:

“This is the fifth game away we have won this season. That is really good,” he said

“But we cannot look at that too much. We have another game against Manchester City We will do our best to prepare.”

Asked about injuries to his star players, Ancelotti said: “James back? No, the players out for the Sheffield game are also out for the City game. Richarlison is fine and we are following the concussion protocol and he will be ready.”
