I’d have seen Red- ing

GOAL CELEBRATION HARD TO RESIST ADMITS McINTYRE

- BY ROBERT DUNFORD

TOM McINTYRE was glad fans missed his first Reading goal because he would have been sent off if they were there to witness it.

The defender, 22, opened the scoring over Luton, helping to push the Royals into the top six.

McIntyre has been with the Berkshire side since he was an e i g h t - y e a r - o ld , coming through their academy.

The Scot admitted he would have been booked if supporters were in the Madejski, and after drawing a yellow for a foul before the break, he knew he would have then seen red.

He said “I’m lucky there weren’t fans here because

I would have gone head first into the East Stand, got a yellow card, then got another yellow card for that tackle.

“It was brilliant to score, I always thought I’d celebrate like this but when it happened my head completely went.

“I was just overcome with joy. It’s a dream of mine and I’ve sort of pictured it in my head so many times and played it out. But to finally do it was so special.”

The volley by McIntyre set the tone for a Royals win in an opening period of few chances.

All three points looked assured before the break, when Alfa Semedo slotted home for his first goal in a Reading shirt.

Luton were stronger after the restart, and they pulled one back before the end with a 25- yard effort by Kazenga LuaLua. But it came too late for the Hatters, who host Bristol City tomorrow and QPR after that.

Boss Nathan Jones said: “We’ve just got to make sure that we’re on some footing where we pick up results.

“We’ve had some difficult games, we have to make sure we capitalise on these two home games.

“It’s a long way to go, we’re got to make sure we are nowhere near where we were last year.

“We have to continue in that vein, and start working up the table.

“We just need more quality and belief, we’ve got to make sure we’re at it.”
