The Tory leader pledged it would be operating by June. But the system has been heavily criticised for failing to trace enough contacts of infected people

“WE have said throughout this pandemic that we must, and we will be, guided by the science.” The PM has not always followed the science, which often conflicts because advisers disagree on measures; there is no “the science”. Advisers pressed for national lockdown measures. He ignored those demands but when cases continued to rise he called a second national lockdown in November.

“I DO think face coverings will be useful, both for epidemiolo­gical reasons, but also for giving people confidence that they can go back to work.”

This came after months of Mr Johnson saying face masks were unnecessar­y.
