A MURDERER has been given a lethal injection as outgoing President Donald Trump continues on his execution spree.

Former drug trafficker Corey Johnson died on Thursday after a lastditch effort to spare his life because he had contracted Covid-19 failed.

If he had received a stay of execution beyond Joe Biden’s inauguration next Wednesday, it would be unlikely he would ever have been put to death as the incoming president has vowed to end federal executions. Johnson, 52, died at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, a day after killer Lisa Montgomery’s execution. In a statement, he said he was “sorry for my crimes”. He added: “On the streets, I was looking for shortcuts, I was blind and stupid. I am not the same man that I was.” Of his last meal he said “the pizza and strawberry shake were wonderful,” but he complained he never received the jam doughnuts that he ordered, adding: “What’s with that? This should be fixed.”

As he was strapped to a gurney he was asked if he had any last words. Johnson replied: “No, I’m OK. I am at peace.” Several seconds later, he said, “Love you.”

He was convicted in 1993 of seven murders, among a host of further charges related to drug trafficking and acts of violence in Virginia.

His lawyers had argued that as he had Covid the injection could spark sensations akin to drowning. Foreseeable unnecessary suffering can be enough for a judge to stay the death sentence.

Johnson was the 12th federal inmate put to death under Trump. Last night, killer Dustin Higgs, 48, was due to be Trump’s final death row execution.

The pro-death penalty President resumed federal executions assuring that last year, for the first time in history, the US government executed more people than all 50 states combined.
