Let’s do this together

- SIOBHANMcNALLY

Today’s meant to be Blue Monday, but it looks like it’s a White Monday for many of you.

It’s not that I’m bitter (she said through gritted teeth) but I’ve been standing here on snow watch, shaking my fist at the sky in full ski gear since the start of December.

The sledge is out of the loft, ready for some snow action, and the waterproof gloves on the radiator, just waiting to get soaked through.

But not even a single, teeny tiny snowflake so far.

It’s not that we don’t get snow all this way down south, where we live near Southampton. Over the years I’ve been stuck in drifts, skidded my car round snow-compacted roads, and even been snowed-in at the house.

The best year was when Jesse was about five years old and the heavy snow closed the schools, so we all went to St Catherine’s Hill on the outskirts of town.

It was carnage with kids coming down on tea trays backwards and on their heads. There was screaming, laughing, and a lot of icy tears mixed with snot and possibly quite a lot of blood.

Then as we stood around at the bottom of the hill getting our breath back, we looked up at the top and saw a ruddy great lifeboat-sized rowing boat being launched off the hill filled with shrieking teenagers.

It was one of the maddest things I have ever seen and thankfully nobody got hurt, but it did make me think there’s something about snow that brings out the reckless daredevil in us all. Why else would perfectly reasonable people pick up great clods of ice and throw them at each other’s heads?

Anyway, I’ll just sit here in my woolly hat… and wait. Keep sending me your snowy photos so I can at least enjoy your fun.
