HENLEY’S RAH-RAH DRUM FOR CHORLEY..

- JEREMY CROSS

ADAM HENLEY might have a prized Raheem Sterling shirt hanging on his wall.

But he has no intention of being star-struck when Wolves come to town this week.

Chorley defender Henley (above) had the memento framed after marking the England winger for Blackburn in an FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool at Ewood Park in 2015.

The full-back has tasted life in the big time, winning two Wales caps alongside Gareth Bale.

And he was part of the Blackburn side that won 3-2 at Manchester United in 2011 to leave Sir Alex Ferguson raging.

So when Henley’s National League North minnows host Premier League giants Wolves in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday night, the 26-year-old is determined not to be overawed.

Henley said: “We have to treat the week as normally as possible – and it’s important that everyone in the squad realises it’s just another game of football.

“You can’t get too overexcited.

“It is great for the town and the club but we have to focus on the job ahead.”

Henley admits he was like a kid in a sweet shop on Boxing Day back in 2011 when he made his full debut for Rovers at Anfield and lined up against the likes of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll.

Then on New Year’s Eve he played a key role in Rovers’ stunning triumph at Old Trafford, winning the late corner that enabled Grant Hanley to score the decisive goal.

“I got goosebumps walking out at Anfield,” he recalled. “Hearing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was amazing and I remember getting Jamie Carragher’s shirt after the game.

“I grew up a Liverpool fan, so it was like a dream come true and then a few days later I was at Old Trafford helping Blackburn win.

“I didn’t get a United shirt that day though.

“They were all so annoyed at losing none of them would swap!”

Henley was born in Tennessee but moved to the UK at the age of two and qualifies for Wales through his mum.

Chorley hope to generate more than £500,000 from the visit of Nuno Espirito Santo’s men having knocked out Derby to reach the fourth round for the first time in their history.

Henley, who grew up in Chorley and still lives in the Lancashire town, said: “It’s definitely given everyone a huge lift. The middle of 2020 was really tough and things were looking really dark for everyone connected to the club.

“And everyone needs moments like these.”
