SLICE OF LUCK HAS CITY ZAK IN BUSINESS

BRISTOL CITY 2 Diedhiou 8, Vyner 77 PRESTON 0

- BY RICHARD LATHAM

ZAK VYNER was inundated with messages after netting his first goal.

But far from being complimentary, most poked fun at the 77th-minute mis-hit which sealed a win that kept Bristol City in the play-off hunt.

Vyner (above) took a swing with his left boot and looked amazed when an embarrassing slice sent it spinning just inside the far post. “My parents, brother and lots of friends have already contacted me,” said the 23-year-old after the game. “Most took the mick out of my goal but I don’t care. If I had caught the ball as I intended, it would probably have sailed out of the ground!”

Famara Diedhiou, whose talks over a new contract at Ashton Gate are ongoing, headed City in front from Tommy Rowe’s eighthminute corner.

Preston improved to dominate possession for much of the second half but failed to penetrate after Paul Huntington had clipped the bar with a 57th-minute header.

Preston midfielder Tom Barkhuizen said: “For an hour we played well without creating enough. We conceded a sloppy goal to fall behind and, although we played some good football, we didn’t go anywhere with it. Once they went ahead, they managed the game well, which is something we have often done.” BRISTOL CITY: Bentley 6, Hunt 7, Kalas 8, Mawson 8, Rowe 7, Adelukan 6 (Bakinson 86), Vyner 7, Nagy 7, Palmer 7 (Massengo 70, 6), Martin 7, Diedhiou 7 (Wells 78) PRESTON: Iversen 6, Fisher 6 (Ledson 86), Huntington 7, Davies 7, Hughes 6, Browne 6, Whiteman 6 (Jakobsen 78, 5), Barkhuizen 5 (Potts 66, 6), Johnson 6 (Evans 66, 6), Sinclair 6, Maguire 5 (Molumby 78)
