Talkin’ ‘bout my... 10 new Who songs

AS BATTERED STARS TAKE A BREAK TORVILL & DEAN Ice legends pick best of the past

- BY MARK JEFFERIES Showbiz Editor

ROCKER Pete Townshend says he has up to 10 possible songs for a new Who album and is likely to team up with singer Roger Daltrey after lockdown.

The guitarist, 75, is working in his home studio and “wants to make another” if it was worthwhile financially, calling streaming income “a joke”.

He said: “There’s pages and pages of draft lyrics.

“If the moment comes, I’ll go in and start.”

The band released 12th studio album “Who” in 2019 to critical acclaim.

Townshend said he and frontman Daltrey, 76, “only just about got it done”, adding: “We’re very different – politically, socially, spiritually, in every respect. But we happen to be in this band together.”

I loved the story about the giant tortoise on St Helena becoming the world’s oldest living land animal after reaching its 189th birthday. What an achievement. Imagine being on Earth three times longer than Judy Murray and not feeling pressured to do something about all those wrinkles on your saggy neck. What’s that? The tortoise was a Jonathan not a Judy, so no one was telling him to have surgery? Ah, I get it.

CORRIE star Faye Brooks seems to say it’s skate to be here as she hugs her new Dancing On Ice partner Matt Evers.

The pair don’t have a show this weekend but that didn’t stop them hitting the rink to get ahead for next week’s performance. Matt joins Faye, 33, after her original skating partner, Hamish Gaman, was pulled out of the show with injury.

RAY QUINN’S SPLIT JUMP

The singer won Dancing on Ice in 2009 and was Champion of Champions in 2014. Christopher: “I believe he’s the best all-round skater we’ve ever had. An iconic moment was when he did the split jump. We’d never seen a celebrity achieve something like this on the show.”

Jayne: “He’s a natural performer, he’s got skating skills and he’s very musical. He can sing, he can dance, he can do everything.”

NERVES SINK PAMELA ANDERSON

She was perfectly at ease in the sea, but frozen water was more of a challenge for Pamela when she got her skates on (and off again fairly quickly) in the 2013 series alongside pro skater Matt Evers.

Jayne: “She was good in training and we were really impressed. She was doing really well, but I think she succumbed to her nerves on the live show.”

Christopher: “She had the ability but when it came to a live show it started to fall apart. She made a little mistake and it escalated.”

THAT BOLERO

It is the routine remembered by millions almost 40 years later and still holds a special place in Chris and Jayne’s hearts. Christopher: I think 24 million people watched us perform Bolero and this was before computers and things going viral. Dancing on Ice wouldn’t be Dancing on Ice if we hadn’t won the Olympics back in 1984.” Jayne: “Dancing on Ice has kept it alive. In the previous series, Chris and I would always do new versions of Bolero. It kept it alive for us as well.”

PERRI KIELY’S BACKFLIP

The Diversity star has probably been doing backflips since he could stand up but on the ice in a pair of skates... surely not? Christopher: “This was the first time we have seen one of our celebrities execute a backflip. But as Perri said, since he’s been in Diversity all he’s done is back flips. We worked for weeks getting him ready.” Jayne: “Perri is one of our best technical skaters and a natural talent. He had a great partnership with Vanessa and it was a joy to watch their performances.”

JAI HO.. HAYLEY AND DAN

Actress Hayley Tamaddon and pro partner Dan Whiston wowed in the 2010 series with a skate to music from Slumdog Millionaire, which got top marks from all the judges. Jayne: “This particular routine is so popular as it was unusual, we’d never seen that style of dance on the ice. It was very stylistic.” Christopher: “The routine was so precise and so quick across the ice, Hayley and Dan made it look like a professional routine. Their personalities brought it together and it was powerful and dynamic.”

AND THE ROMANCE

Canadian skater Brianne Delcourt had several relationships on the show. But she found lasting love and wed ex-footballer Kevin Kilbane, pictured together.

Sylvain Longchambon was with Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe but wed Corrie’s Samia Ghadie after they were partnered.

And when Ex-England goalie David Seaman and Frankie Poultney met on the live tour in 2008 sparks flew. They wed in 2015. Christopher: “We never know about any romance on the show. It’s very covert.”

GEMMA COLLINS’ FALL

The TOWIE star was unforgettable both on and off the ice in her 2019 appearances – not just for her skating. Christopher: Gemma was a great character on the ice. Her fall was similar to the Todd Carty moment, it made a lot of headlines and news. She also had lots of back and forth with Jason Gardiner, she certainly gave as good as she got. When she fell, she had that moment where she stayed down, everybody held their breath but then she got up and carried on, that was a big moment for everybody and for her. Jayne: Before she fell, it was one of her better performances of the series. She caught her toe pick but she got back up and finished her routine which is hugely commendable.”

THEY’VE had dislocated shoulders, positive Covid tests, leg gashes, Ofcom complaints and even a freak injury caused by socks.

And that’s only in this Dancing on Ice.

But just because there’s been a run of series of

TODD CARTY NOT DANCING ON ICE

Who can forget the man who taught us all how to make a graceful exit in the 2009 series? (The opposite of his!) Christopher: “He’s such a favourite because it’s called Dancing on Ice and he didn’t do any of that but he had a TV gold moment and everybody remembers him for it.

Jayne: “His skating never improved but he was very good with people laughing along with him.” Christopher: “He caught his toe pick and it just set off this calamity of getting off the ice. During his iconic skate, a member of the crew who was stationed in the tunnel helped Todd get back up and out onto the ice.” Jayne: “We all breathed a sigh of relief when he reappeared.” bad luck, it doesn’t mean the ITV favourite won’t go on – in some form.

For while contestants are taking a week off to recover from a catalogue of injuries, fans will be able to re-live

THE DREADED HEADBANGERS

Actress Jorgie Porter and Matt Evers performed a superb headbanger – when a skater is held by the ankle and spun around with their head near the ice – in 2012, above.

But it can easily go wrong. Christopher: “The headbanger can look so dangerous. We’ve seen moments when they work brilliantly and moments, as we will see on Sunday, where partners can be dropped. Former contestant and England goalkeeper David Seaman lost his footing while doing the headbanger and dropped his partner, grazing her chin.

Jayne: “When our celebrities first attempt the headbanger they start by wearing a helmet during practice.” favourite moments from the past 12 series. It’s been quite a run, so what will stand out?

There’s only one couple who can truly judge, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. Here they share their top 10 best bits...
