Ethical food sales up a tasty 14%

- BY ALAN JONES

ETHICAL shoppers have sent sales of Fairtrade food and drink soaring 14 per cent year-on-year.

One in four are seeking out such products that boost farmers in developing countries, the Fairtrade Foundation said.

And sales of wine sourced ethically have risen a 35 per cent to seven million bottles, Lidl has revealed.

Sarah Singer, of the Fairtrade Foundation, which helps two million farmers, said: “There is a very strong body of shoppers who identify with the values of Fairtrade and want business to play fair.”

BRITISH Gas engineers have launched new strikes after talks to resolve a dispute over pay and conditions “faltered”.

GMB members walked out on Friday for four days, with more action planned.

The union said British Gas had refused to change plans which it claims will rehire staff on worse terms.

Last weekend’s strikes were halted for talks at conciliation service Acas.

Justin Bowden, GMB national officer, said: “We entered into talks in good faith, but a deal is only possible if the company takes its fire and rehire plan off the table.”

British Gas insists protecting jobs.

It added it will ensure it can deal with callouts from vulnerable customers amid the strikes. it is

News of Prince Harry and Meghan’s new baby is causing some very mixed views. No, not the news of their unborn second child.

But the new baby that is their latest big project, a world exclusive interview with BFF Oprah Winfrey.

Having told Granny HRH they’ll never return as working royals, they’ll now enjoy an audience with the Queen of Chat shows.

However, Eamonn Holmes has questioned whether a pow-wow with their pal and wedding guest Oprah should be classed as an interview at all.

After all, once you’ve watched your interviewees do the conga, Lambada or – as I like to think – Gangnam Style at their wedding reception, can a sit-down exclusive with them carry as much gravitas? It’s hardly going to be Frost v Nixon, or Maitlis v Harry’s Uncle Randy Andy. Speaking of the Yorks, it was, of course, to Oprah that Fergie made her mea culpa in 2010 – after trying to sell the Duke for

access to £500,000.

She should have known it was really an undercover sting. Anyone else would find a cheaper way to try to get Andy’s undivided attention... An invite to dinner at Pizza express Woking, of course.

while struggling to put on a surgical glove, drew on all his prime-ministerial wisdom and decided to quip: “It’s like OJ Simpson!”

Cue utter disbelief, headed by actress-activist Thandie Newton and many, many, many others on social media.

It might answer another question though. Just who was Foreign Minister Dominic Raab trying to keep out during his Sky News interview, with that deftly-placed broom?

My guess – a mop... a mop of blond hair on a bit of a plank.
