Keir can lead us to a better future

- Michael Mahe, Ashton-under-Lyne Gtr Manchester

■ IN Keir Starmer we have the best chance of exposing the PM for the charlatan he is. He is everything Johnson isn’t – hard-working, honest, trustworthy with a clear grasp of all the vital issues facing this country.

Like Tony Blair before him, he also appeals to the more middle of the road voter. This is absolutely vital to the chance of Labour getting elected in the future.

The Government has a huge majority but if enough pressure is applied by the Opposition, such as searching questions at PMQs, highlighting Johnson’s frailties and failures on issues like the high death toll and free school meals, with the assistance of some wavering Tory MPs, I think he might either resign, or be “helped” to leave.

Remember Mrs Thatcher!

■ Keir Starmer made a well thought out speech regarding the future of this country and his optimism that we can become a fairer society. To help him achieve this we need Jeremy Corbyn to rein in his supporters and get behind Mr Starmer wholeheartedly. Jeremy had a great many supporters and some good ideas but the country didn’t go for it. He now needs to stop behaving like a sore loser and help us get a much-needed Labour government by backing the Labour leader in words and deeds. Marian Hernes North Cheam, Surrey ■ Keir Starmer is trying to do two things simultaneously. Firstly, create a fairer society with a fairer distribution of wealth and secondly to introduce more honesty into politics. We shouldn’t expect refuse collectors to earn the same wage as a brain surgeon or an architect, just fairer distribution would be great.

As for honesty, if we halved the amount of lies told in politics that would be a start – then perhaps Labour under Keir Starmer would have a fair chance of beating the Tories. I just hope that Johnson’s incompetence will destroy the Tories’ popularity and Keir will lead us to a better life. The alternative doesn’t bear thinking about. ■ I’ve heard several times recently people talking of the inevitability of a one-party state in this country which is alarming and demoralising. The majority of people don’t vote Conservative, yet Johnson won an 80-seat majority with under 50% of the vote.

Ordinary folk cannot live their lives in relative poverty because of the unfair ‘first past the post’ system we are stuck with. Surely, it’s time for proportional representation so that voices from all sides get a say in running the country and everyone gets an equal chance. John Sedgwick, Tamworth, Staffs

■ I agree with everything Keir Starmer said in his speech about how to rebuild after coronavirus. But if Labour is to have a chance of beating the Tories he needs to be unrelenting in his attacks against this inept Government who have caused Britain to have one of the highest Covid death tolls per capita in the world.

I want to see him week after week going for the jugular at PMQs and giving no room for slippery Boris to dodge the difficult questions.

■ Going through this pandemic with the Tories in power and a PM who doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing is a nightmare. The sooner we get a general election the better.

What do voters who defected from Labour to the Tories think of Boris now giving his cronies billion pound pandemic contracts and failing to deliver?
