Royal mess that has us all divided

-

The Queen was right to remove Meghan and Harry’s patronages since they had, in effect, turned their back on them when they walked away last year.

The lack of respect they have shown her will only widen the gap between them even further.

And the interview they gave Oprah Winfrey will no doubt have the Royal Family deeply concerned as to the extent any revelations will have on its reputation.

Darren Lewis’ comment piece about Harry and Meghan (Mirror, Feb 21) was spot on. It’s so nice to see someone stick up for them.

He said they don’t need the patronages to prove their empathy with ordinary people.

But it’s outrageous that the Queen has taken away Harry’s military responsibilities.

This is a guy who fought against the Taliban, risking his life, and I feel he is being punished for leaving the Royal Family. I say good for you Harry and Meghan – Princess Diana would be so proud of you.

I do think it was very churlish of the Royal Family to strip Harry of his military titles, which he, out of all the royals, deserves to hold. Not just because of his active military service, but because of his charity work setting up the Invictus Games, which have helped so many servicemen.

I can quite understand his response that “charity is universal”. And actions speak louder than words. Meanwhile, disgraced Andrew continues to enjoy a privileged position, contributing nothing.

I don’t get what the big upset is – Harry has never wanted to be a royal and has lived his life the way he wants to. He has only ever used his title to do good in the world.

So we should just let him be happy and let him live the life he chooses. He didn’t ask to be born into royalty.

Bit by bit Harry is eroding all the public affection and esteem he was held in. He and Meghan are said to be “upset” about losing patronages.

I don’t object to them doing their own thing, but they don’t have a right to these patronages any more.

When you are a working member of the Royal Family, you hold these honorary titles and patronages on behalf of the people.

Outside of that job they are not yours. Feel free to offer a life of public service, but you will have to start it outside of representing the people you left behind.

You can’t have it both ways. Andrew Brown, Worcester

■ It’s not wholly unexpected that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been stripped of their patronages and military titles.

But it does leave one wondering who else in the Royal Family is suitable to take over certain roles.

Harry still has the amazing Invictus charity and Meghan her modern and progressive charities, so this is where their future lies.

As Earl Spencer said of his sister Diana: “She needed no royal title to continue to generate her particular brand of magic.”

Indeed she didn’t – and neither do Harry and Meghan.

I wish them well.
