Siblings speak out for the first time

- BY OLLIE BUCKLEY

On this day

52 YEARS AGO (1969)

We told how the Kray twins and their henchmen were found guilty of murder. Reggie Kray stabbed to death gangster Jack “the Hat” McVitie. Ronnie Kray shot dead gangster George Cornell.

75 YEARS AGO (1946)

On a lecture tour of the US, Winston Churchill said an “iron curtain” had divided Europe. He coined the phrase the “special relationship” in the same speech.

58 YEARS AGO (1963)

US singers Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins were killed in a plane crash in America. The pilot, who also died, lost control in bad weather.

Today’s giggle

Where did Noah keep his bees?

In his Ark hives.

As bars face months with little or no income and with thousands already closed, it’s time to Save Our Pubs. Regular John Gledhill tells why he can’t wait to get back to Ye Olde Blue Bell, Preston, Lancs...

MY favourite pub is on Church Street and there are four of us who regularly enjoy a pint there together: myself, my brother Barry and our close pals Alan and John C.

We’ve been meeting there once a month for the past five years. We’d all wear stetsons and have been nicknamed “The Cowboys” by other punters. It’s the kind of place where

everyone knows everyone but newcomers are welcome.

The Blue Bell does not have any music, no televisions and you won’t find people glued to their phones. It’s a traditional pub serving very good beer and lager, where conversation flows.

On top of that, the staff are wonderful. We all cannot wait until we can get back there for a pint or four.

ALASTAIR Campbell was attacked by a driver he confronted for throwing litter in the street.

The former Labour spin doctor revealed the clash on his podcast Football, Feminism and Everything In Between.

He said a “guy chucked paper, sweet packets and fag packets” out of a car.

When he confronted him the man “squared up”.

Campbell, 63, went into a shop but on leaving it saw the man back in his car. He said: “I chucked his litter on his lap. He tried to push me, hit me on the back, and kicked the bike.”

A shopkeeper intervened and Campbell later saw his neighbour Michael Palin in Camden, North London, who told him: “You did the right and wrong thing.”

A MAN set fire to a couple’s dream cottage in a “selfish and vindictive” attack after they decided not to buy two other properties from him.

Property developer Matthew Green, 37, had tried to gazump the couple when he learned they were buying a different cottage.

When it failed to stop the deal, Green was so angry he set fire to the empty property in Swaffham, REVENGE Matthew Green

Norfolk, in June 2019. The couple visited the house the next night to show it off to friends and found devastation. Green, from Swaffham, who at an earlier hearing admitted arson, got a 12-month suspended jail sentence and must pay £8,796 compensation. Acting Det Insp Richard Weller said Green was “motivated by greed and control”. The couple were so scared by the attack they pulled out of the cottage deal and lost their £30,000 deposit.
