Spoiled Boris on another planet

-

WHAT is wrong with Boris Johnson? Why should he expect anyone, other than himself, to pay for the redecoration of his flat in Downing Street?

It has always been the way of the Tories to look after themselves and their rich friends.

So many bad decisions have been made during this pandemic – nearly 124,000 dead, nothing in the Budget to help NHS workers or teachers, and apparently Johnson has the nerve to ask for help to pay for £100-a-metre fabric.

As a 79-year-old married pensioner, whose joint pension is little more than £265 a week, out of which we now have to pay £159 for a TV licence and, thanks to the Government not giving councils more money, a big rise in council tax, I find this abhorrent.

Step into the real world, Mr Johnson, and decorate your own flat – there’s wallpaper at B&Q! Wendy Potter, Wolverhampton

■ Boris Johnson had to be pressured into providing free school meals to poor children in the school holidays. Only a campaign led by footballer Marcus Rashford forced a series of U-turns.

Now comes news Downing Street may be trying to set up a charity to cover the costs of the refurbishment of the flat at No11 where Boris Johnson lives. It seems the very well paid Boris Johnson has no shame in turning to charity to lavishly refurbish his living quarters or no fear that taking “freebies” will leave him “dependent” on

handouts. Indeed, charity appears to begin in Boris’s home but ends when it comes to hungry children. Sasha Simic, North London

■ The timing of Boris Johnson’s Downing Street refurb couldn’t be worse and won’t go down well.

Talk of gold wall coverings and fabric costing £100 a metre is sickening when we are constantly told there isn’t enough money to feed hungry schoolchildren or to give our key workers a decent pay rise for keeping the country going during this crisis.

Boris and Carrie have got this one badly wrong.

■ Why should taxpayers pay for Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds to update the flat they live in? Why can’t they pay for the gold wall coverings and £100-per-metre fabric they reportedly want?

Boris has a nerve to even consider this lavish revamp after all the costly mistakes he has made in the last 12 months. In fact, he should do the honourable thing

and resign – and look for somewhere else to live. M Tuplin, Ulceby, North Lincs

■ This spoiled couple should learn to live with what they have. Surely, the decor can’t be as bad as all that.

Occupants of this exclusive council home should pay for the redecorating themselves and be banned from accepting gifts for refurbishing it. This is a slippery slope open to abuse.

■ What planet are this privileged couple on? I suggest the PM gets a grip and concentrates on the important stuff, like running the country, instead of pandering to his girlfriend’s whims and fancies. Susan Clarke

Croydon, South London

■ I was livid to read about the PM and Carrie Symonds apparently plotting a lavish refurb of their grace-and-favour apartment. How out of touch can you be when people are struggling to survive? C Spencer, Barnsley
