Every One’s a critics’ choice
America hails another royal drama
A British royal drama steeped in controversy caused shockwaves over in LA on Sunday night... as The Crown won four categories at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
The Netflix royals (no, not those two) reigned victorious in two TV acting categories, with Emma Corrin, 25, and Josh O’Connor, 30 – who play Princess Diana and Prince Charles – named Best Actress and Best Actor in a Drama Series.
Emma pipped Olivia Colman, who plays The Queen in the series, for the win.
Gillian Anderson, 52, was named Best Supporting Actress for her role as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and The Crown was named Best Drama.
There was more success for British stars, with John Boyega, 28, named Best Actor in a Miniseries for his role in Red, White And Blue, part of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series, in which he played a founding member of the Black Police Association. Pals on the set of upcoming film, They Cloned Tyrone, decorated John’s trailer with balloons to celebrate.
Daniel Kaluuya, 32, was named Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Chicago Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton in Judas And The Black Messiah.
Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones, 22, and I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel, 33, lost out to Anya Taylor-Joy, named Best Actress in a Limited Series for chess drama The Queen’s Gambit.
Anya, 24, celebrated at her London home until 4am, with a “quarantine afterparty”, throwing a bear outfit over her purple Dior frock and dancing into the early hours. Hannah Waddingham , 46, scooped the Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy win for her role in Ted Lasso, while in the film categories, Carey Mulligan, 35, won Best Actress for her performance in Promising Young Woman. So all in all, Brits were the toast of Hollywood. At least some were, anyway.
