ALEX Beresford says he did not want Piers Morgan to quit Good Morning Britain after their heated on-air discussion about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The weather presenter clashed with Morgan on Tuesday over his comments about Harry and Meghan’s interview with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey.

Morgan stormed off set and quit the ITV programme later that day.

Beresford said of Morgan: “I didn’t want him to quit, but I did want him to listen. I hoped we could reach a place of understanding. It’s sad that we weren’t able to get there, but challenging his opinion was not an outrage. On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree.

“Personally, Piers has always supported my growth. He’s given me advice on several occasions and for that I am grateful.

“I wish him well.” Morgan said yesterday: “I had one goal when I joined GMB – beat BBC Breakfast in the ratings. On my last

day, we did it.”

THE number of patients who have waited more than a year for hospital treatment has increased 100-fold.

NHS data shows 304,000 were on the list in January, while those waiting for more than 52 weeks stood at 3,000 last March.

The list for NHS treatment has hit 4.6 million and is likely to rise as people come forward for checks missed during lockdown.

Tim Mitchell, vice president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, said: “The huge sea of need behind [the latest Covid wave] is now coming into view.”

The NHS waiting list is at its highest since 2007 when targets were first

SEA OF NEED Tim Mitchell brought in. Sarah Scobie, director at the Nuffield Trust think-tank, said: “Referrals from GPs have fallen in January – there is a hidden patient group not yet on the waiting list.”

Prof Stephen Powis, the national NHS medical director for England, said: “Admitting more than 100,000 Covid patients to hospital in a single month inevitably had a knock-on effect on some non-urgent care.”
