MPs sat in stoney silence as they heard Jess Phillips read out a long list of women who have been killed by men over the last year.

In what has become a grim annual event to mark International Women’s Day, the Labour MP read out more than 110 names to highlight the scale of male violence against women.

Deputy Speaker Eleanor Laing temporarily suspended the time limit on members’ speeches – and the rule which normally prohibits the reading of lists – in order to allow Ms Phillips to say the shocking roll call.

Ms Phillips said: “In this place we count what we care about, vaccines, the number of people on

SADNESS MP Jess Philliips read out list benefits, we rule or oppose based on a count. However we don’t currently count dead women.

“Dead women is a thing that we’ve all just accepted as part of our daily lives. One of those things.”

After reading the list, Ms Phillips said: “We all prayed that the name of Sarah Everard would never be on any list. Let’s work to make sure nobody’s name ends up on this list again.” It came as the Tories’ London mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey refused to stop “politicising” the Sarah Everard case, declaring: “I don’t regret it”. He sparked fury by saying “as a father and husband” he was upset his wife and daughter feared living in their own city – and it would be different if he was Mayor.”

A MAN has appeared in court charged with murdering a 16-year-old girl who died after an incident at her family’s restaurant.

Chun Xu, 31, is accused of killing Wenjing Lin, also known as Wenjing Xu, though the pair are understood to be unrelated.

Xu, of no fixed address, is also charged with attempting to murder a man aged 38.

The defendant appeared before Merthyr Tydfil magistrates court yesterday. He did not enter a plea to either charge and was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at Cardiff crown court today.

South Wales Police said a 38-year-old man previously arrested remains in hospital in a stable condition and is no longer being treated as a suspect.

Police were called to reports of an attack in the Blue Sky takeaway in Ynyswen, Rhondda Cynon Taf, on March 5.
