Pay snub is plot to privatise NHS

- FIONA PARKER Edited by Patricia Smith, Sevenoaks, Kent

THIS scheming government’s “derisory” 1% pay offer to NHS staff is clearly designed to further demoralise them and hasten the demise of the service.

Then a clear path to privatisation will open enabling their cronies to profit.

It will be healthcare for those who can afford it and to hell with the rest who can’t.

Our NHS staff are exhausted from their epic battle against Covid-19 and some have paid the ultimate price for their dedication.

They have been running on empty for a long time and some will be forced to take the only way out and leave the service – putting it in danger of collapse which is just what the Tories want.

The Tories set a new low in hypocrisy when peer Lord Bethell stated the 1% pay offer for nurses was sufficient.

My local hospital treated Boris Johnson for Covid-19, yet the PM has reneged on the promised 2.1% NHS pay award despite them saving his life.

His hypocritical and theatrical hand clapping outside No10 is sickening for decent people who can now be under no illusions that this charlatan has totally betrayed the nurses and all frontline medical staff.

Terry Thomas South West London

The 1% pay rise is an insult, especially after NHS chief Sir Simon Stevens pointed out staff had already been allocated 2.1%. But they

should be careful they don’t fall into a trap by taking strike action or leaving in droves.

That’s exactly what the Tories want so they can go ahead and privatise the service.

Matt Hancock says 1% is all they can afford. He should be asked why £37billion was wasted on a failed test and trace scheme and PPE contracts for firms who had no experience in that field

The Tories don’t know the meaning of honour and truth. George Sargeson, Hull

Having cheered our wonderful NHS workers during the first lockdown, we should stand outside our homes every Thursday and jeer this despicable government until it reviews its derisory 1% offer.

I cannot be alone in my disgust at the comments of Conservative frontbench peer Lord Bethell justifying the proposed 1% pay rise by saying nurses have job security many would “envy”.

This comes from a hereditary peer who can claim more than £300 a day and get subsidised meals just for turning up at work.

We have 800 unelected peers

sitting in the House of Lords. Surely it’s time for change.

His views are typical of the Tories who, in their contempt for the working class, think we should be grateful for crumbs.

Joe Donnelly, Haslingden, Lancs

Regarding the Government’s offer of a 1% pay rise to NHS workers, yes it is derisory, but given the immense national debt caused mainly by Covid, it is, to some extent, understandable.

However, at the beginning of his Brexit campaign Boris Johnson told us the £350million a week we paid to Brussels would go to the NHS once we left the EU.

Well, we’re out now, Boris, so use that money to give our NHS workers the rise they deserve. Keith Chappell, Aldershot, Hants

The 1% offer for NHS staff is insulting after all the brilliant work they have done – and are still doing – during this Covid pandemic.

Maybe this Government hope they will leave so it can privatise the service and everyone will have to pay for medical care as they do in the US.

There is method in this madness.
