United keeper Dean gets chance to make up for Milan clanger against in-form Hammers

- BY GIDEON BROOKS

DEAN HENDERSON will have an immediate chance to atone for his Europa League mistake when West Ham visit Old Trafford tomorrow night.

The United goalkeeper’s failure to stop a last-minute header in the first leg against AC Milan has left them facing a huge task in Italy next week.

David de Gea is expected to be back for that match but he is not set to return to training until Monday or Tuesday following the birth of his first child in Spain.

Protocols dictate he needs to return a negative coronavirus test before rejoining the main training group.

But his return will not end the battle for the gloves at Old Trafford which has been a fascinating subplot of United’s season with the spotlight on both men.

After some highprofile mistakes and criticism of De Gea, Henderson had done well keeping two consecutive clean sheets against Crystal Palace and Manchester City.

Ole Gunnar

Solskjaer admitted he should have done better against Simon Kjaer’s header for Milan,

Henderson (right) will be tested by high-flying West Ham who are keeping tabs on the Champions League spots just two points behind Chelsea.

Solskjaer said he has been hugely impressed with the job former United manager David Moyes has been doing in East London.

“They have been brilliant. We played them in the FA Cup not so long ago as well. We went to extra time. It was a tight, even game,” said Solskjaer.

“He has players who score goals, they are creative, they defend really well, they are really difficult at setplays.

“David has done a tremendous job, that we know he is capable of and I am very happy for him.

“We know it is a big game for us. It’s maybe too far ahead to City so we need to consolidate our place in the top two or three hopefully.”

Jesse Lingard has been superb for West Ham since leaving Old Trafford on loan and it is good news for United he is not able to play against his parent club.

Aside from the Hammers missing him, Solskjaer insisted the move has been a win-win situation for all parties.

He said: “For Jesse, it’s really worked out, for David it’s really worked out and for us as a club as well because we know Jesse’s position is a No.10.

“We have Bruno Fernandes there, so it was a no-brainer to get Jesse a chance to prove himself and play some football again.

“He has been really bright for them and finally back to himself.”
