Hooray! The BAFTA nominations have been released, and – newsflash! – no one is upset.
BAFTA President Prince William last year called for a shake-up of the industry after all-white acting nominees and all-male director nominees.
But with East London drama Rocks and the female-directed Nomadland now among its most diverse nominations to date, it’s gone from # BAFTAsowhite to # BAFTAsallright.
For years, male directors with barely a whiff of experience have been landing the so-called tentpole movies, the big franchise blockbusters with supersized budgets.
Hopefully now we’ll see a more level playing field, one where men must prove they can handle the smaller tentpoles first – like those from Decathalon, perhaps.
