CAMPBELL’S AIMING FOR HATT-TRICK

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

CAMPBELL HATTON was sitting beside his dad when Ricky’s phone rang.

“It’s the chippy isn’t it?” he quipped as Ricky fumbled in his back pocket for the phone.

Campbell’s putdowns are as lethal as his dad’s famous bodyshots and show he has more than enough personality to carry the famous Hatton name in the ring.

Campbell, 19, (above with Ricky) will make his pro debut against Spaniard Jesus Ruiz on Saturday on the undercard of Dillian Whyte’s rematch with Alexander Povetkin in Gibraltar.

And he is aware his family background makes him a big target.

“I know there will be pressure on me because of who my dad is and what he achieved,” he said.

“I know that will bring the best out of everyone who fights me because they will want to be able to say they beat a Hatton. But it will also bring the best out of me because I know I have to be at my best to beat them.”

Campbell (right, with Ricky and promoter Eddie Hearn), who won a National Novice title and a couple of North West titles as an amateur before turning pro with Matchroom, will start at super-featherweight and says being a Hatton has plenty of positives.

Nicknamed The Hurricane, he feels he can draw on the huge experience of his dad, who is his manager, and his uncle and former world-title challenger Matthew, who is his trainer.

“There are fighters out there who would kill to have that kind of advice in their corner and I intend to use it,” said Campbell.

Two-weight world champion Ricky knew Campbell had the right stuff when he decked him at 14 and his son asked for another spar.

“I threw a right hand, he got out of the way and sunk me with a left hook,” said Campbell.

Ricky said: “As soon as I did it, I hoped his mam wouldn’t find out! I knew his attitude was right when he said, ‘Can we spar again on Friday?’ And that’s the way it’s got to be.”

Campbell knows he is following one of Britain’s best and most-popular fighters but that does not put him off.

He said: “I’m focused on the shortterm but there’s no reason why I can’t go all the way with the right work ethic and the people I have around me.”
