Dam good to see beavers home again

BEAVERS have returned to Wales 500 years after being hunted to extinction.

The pair of animals, from Scotland, were released by BBC Springwatch’s Iolo Williams.

They have made their new home at Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve in Powys.

The arrival of beavers, famous for building dams, has raised concerns over damage to river banks, flooding and loss of agricultural land.

But naturalist Iolo said: “They used to be here, they should be here and I would like to see them back on Welsh rivers.”

Beavers have already been re-introduced to England and Scotland.

Darnella told the jury she filmed the scene because: “It wasn’t right, he was suffering. He cried for his mum. He was in pain.” She said none of the onlookers threatened police or used any violence. A firefighter asked “multiple times” if she could check Mr Floyd’s pulse but Chauvin remained kneeling on his neck, she told the court.

Darnella’s nine-year-oldcousin, who was with her at the scene, later said the ambulance crew had to move Chauvin off Mr Floyd’s neck. She said: “They asked him nicely to get off him. He stayed on. They had to pull him off.” Darnella said she felt threatened as the officers “were quick to pull out mace”. She wept as she told how she stays awake at night “apologising” to Mr Floyd for not saving his life. She added: “When I look at George Floyd, I look at my dad, my brothers, my cousins, my uncles, because they are all black... that could have been one of them.”

Earlier martial arts fighter Donald Williams wept as the court heard his 911 call. In it he tells the operator: “Officer 987 killing a citizen in front of us...He just pretty much killed this guy who wasn’t resisting arrest. He had his knee on this dude’s neck the whole time.”

Chauvin denies manslaughter and murder charges. The trial continues.
