Dear Donny

- DONNY SHERIDAN ANSWERS YOUR PROBLEMS

Q AI have a small split in the side of my external water butt, can it be repaired and if so, how? BS Webb, by email I would go with a product called Flashband which is an adhesivebacked bitumen tape which makes a total watertight seal. There is another product called Duck Tape which is also a waterproof fabric tape, however it’s not as large and strong as Flashband. Q

Hi, we are moving to an old house and need to remove lots of old wallpaper. What’s the quickest way to do so?

Sean Coleman, by email

A

I would get a large paste brush and totally soak the walls with water. Wait 30 mins, then repeat. After 30 more minutes, use a scraper and starting from a corner begin peeling the paper and scraping more difficult parts, making sure the wall is kept soaked at all times.

Q

We had damp issues on a gable end bedroom wall. This has been resolved and I’d like some advice as to what paint we should use to cover the mould marks.

Kath Cumming, by email

AGive the wall a light sand with P120 sandpaper, then wipe down before applying a Stain Block. I’d use Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3. If any stains still show through then spot prime with Zinsser B-I-N. You can then apply your top coats of emulsion.

DONNY’S TOP TIP

Remember if you are using masking tape, it’s best not to leave it in place for too long (check the manufacturer’s recommendations). Over time, the adhesive backing will dry and set. Q

We have a 33-inch tall ornament which is now badly sun damaged. What can we use to restore this please?

George Parker, by email

A

If it’s a plastic ornament, I find motor car cleaning products work well. Try Autoglym’s Bumper and Trim Gel which restores the colour and sheen to plastic and rubber.
