POSH OLIVER: VICTORY WAS FOR FREDDIE

- JON WEST

POSH’S last-gasp winner was an emotional moment in more ways than one for Oliver Norburn.

The midfielder, 29 tomorrow, supplied the pass that allowed Siriki Dembele to run through and squeeze the ball past R’s keeper Seny Dieng in the 91st minute.

That sparked a party in the stands as Peterborough, victors at fellow strugglers Hull in midweek, celebrated vital back-to-back wins.

For Norburn (celebrating with Dembele, above), it was also a personal moment to savour on the day Posh paid tribute to Freddie Hill.

Ex-England winger Hill, who died on October 1, aged 81, ended his playing career at London Road and was given a minute’s applause before kick-off.

Norburn, the £350,000 August capture from Shrewsbury, knew exactly what that meant to Hill’s family as he is part of that clan.

Fiancee Lucy is Freddie’s granddaughter and was with dad Graham, whose father had doted on Lillie, the Norburns’ little girl.

Norburn said: “There’s no better feeling than a late winner. You could see the place was rocking – the fans went mad.

“Before the game, the minute’s applause, I was thinking about my missus, her dad in the stands and family. Then, at the end, when we got the win, I was looking up to see if I could see them. But everyone was going mad, so I couldn’t.

“But it was a nice touch. What better way to do it than to get three points?”

Before Dembele’s winner, Ilias Chair fired Rangers in front in the 50th minute direct from a corner, but Harrison Burrows’ levelled six minutes later after Sammie Szmodics’ shot was deflected to the teenager.

Rangers host Sunderland in the EFL Cup tomorrow before entertaining Nottingham Forest in the League on Friday.

Boss Mark Warburton said: “Three games in seven days is a huge ask. It’s not a complaint, we enjoy being busy and big games – we have to manage them better.”
