Night in to kick spiking out

- BY LILY FORD

THOUSANDS of youngsters across the UK are boycotting nightclubs for a “girls’ night in” as they protest against a rise in spiking incidents.

Students in university cities, including Edinburgh, Bristol, Manchester and Leeds, have joined the Girls Night In campaign, which aims to get clubs to increase security to keep women safe.

The Astoria nightclub in Portsmouth, Hants, had tough security measures on Tuesday, with anti-spiking cups in use, drug detection dogs checking every customer and undercover staff inside and out. Owner Alistair Ritchie said: “The Astoria works hard to keep

the creeps out of the party.”

RAPE

Meanwhile, Sunday Brunch presenter Simon Rimmer, 58, has revealed his 24-year-old daughter Flo had her drink spiked five years ago while out for lunch with friends.

On Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4, he said: “She came home in a right state. She said, ‘I’ve literally had three glasses of wine, I am really scared’.

“We took her to A&E. It really, really shook her up, it was a horrible, horrible time.”

Hundreds of cases of drinks being spiked or women being injected have been reported in recent months.

Dale Garlick, 29, of Stalybridge, Gtr Manchester, appeared in court yesterday charged with rape after a complaint from a woman who said her drink had been spiked.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council said there were 198 confirmed reports of drink spiking in September and October across the UK, and 24 reports of some form of injection.

Detectives are investigating six reports of women being injected in Brighton in the past week.
