£160m floating turbines project Charles: Young must join fight
VAST floating wind turbines 15 miles offshore could power thousands of homes under a green pledge by PM Boris Johnson.
He today allocates £160million to kick-start the projects off the coasts of Scotland and Wales.
Firms will bid for the cash – part of a £1.4billion fund – to set up the ports.
Supporters say they harness stronger, reliable winds but there are doubts over funding levels.
The Equinor firm spent £174m on a plant off Aberdeenshire in 2017.
It can power 36,000 homes but the PM is targeting 1GW of energy by 2030 – nine times more than today’s floating offshore wind rate.
Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said the tethered turbines “will create and support thousands of good quality jobs”.
PRINCE Charles has backed the young to help find solutions to the climate emergency.
In a forward to a book about climate change aimed at children, The Prince of Wales says: “The world needs children all around it to imagine the type of future you want to build” so humans and animals can prosper on a healthy planet.
He adds: “Children have a unique curiosity for Nature and this amazing planet we call home. This is because part of being young is knowing we are part of Nature ourselves.”
Sustainably printed, “It’s Up to Us” is out on Monday to coincide with the start of COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference.
Investment firm Baillie Gifford is sponsoring distribution of the book to more than 2,000 Scottish primary schools.
Author Christopher Lloyd, CEO, What on Earth Publishing said: “Activating young people to persuade others to put Nature first is vital if we are to succeed in helping combat climate change.”
