‘THIS WAS A ONE IN A TRILLION EVENT’
Baldwin breaks silence on Halyna’s gun death tragedy
ALEC Baldwin has broken his silence after he accidentally shot dead Halyna Hutchins on the set of his latest movie.
A woman has died. She was my friend. Accidents happen, but not like this
The visibly distraught actor described the killing of the 42-year-old with a live bullet fired from a prop gun as a “horrible event”.
Flanked by wife Hilaria, 37, Baldwin spoke about the tragedy as the couple strolled near the home they share with their six children in Manchester, Vermont.
The 63-year-old said of the tragedy: “A woman died. She was my friend.
“There are incidental accidents on film sets from time to time, but nothing like this. “This is a one in a trillion episode. This is a one in a trillion event. I’m not allowed to make any comments because it’s an ongoing investigation.
“I’ve been ordered by the Sheriff ’s Department. I can’t answer any questions about the investigation. I can’t.”
Director of photography Halyna was shot dead on the set of Rust at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico on October 22. The movie’s director, Joel Souza, 48, was wounded in the shoulder. The gun Baldwin was using to rehearse a scene had been loaded with live rounds rather than blanks. Baldwin added: “We were a very well-oiled crew shooting a film and then this horrible event happened.”
He told on Saturday how he met with Halyna’s husband and her young son after the incident but said he “wouldn’t know how to categorise” how the meeting went. The star added: “The guy is overwhelmed with grief.”
Baldwin also said in the wake of “this horrible catastrophic thing some new measures have to take place,” including the possibility of using rubber guns or plastic guns.
The FBI is investigating Halyna’s death as prosecutors refused to rule out criminal charges against the actor. But no decision will be made until a full probe is completed.
Baldwin said: “We are eagerly awaiting the Sheriff’s Department telling us what their investigation has yielded.”
