Get the rot out once and for all
Mum’s message to Met after cops admit sharing murder scene photos
THE mum of murdered sisters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman called on the Met to “get the rot out” after two officers admitted sharing photos of her daughters’ dead bodies.
PC Jamie Lewis, 33, and his former Met Police colleague Deniz Jaffer, 47, were told they faced jail after admitting misconduct in a public office at a hearing at the Old Bailey yesterday
Lewis, 33, used “degrading and sexist” language as he passed on pictures of the murder scene on WhatsApp, including one shot with his face superimposed on an image of the bodies.
He and Jaffer, who also took and shared pictures, were given conditional bail for sentencing next month. Judge
Mark Lucraft QC told them: “These matters are extremely serious. It is extremely likely you will receive custodial sentences, custodial sentences of some length.”
Outside the court, the sisters’ mother Mina Smallman said Met Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick should carry the can for her “despicable” officers. She said: “You need to drill down and get the rot out once and for all.” She also criticised Dame Cressida for her “shoddy way of behaving and her response since all of this has come out”.
Mrs Smallman, the former Archdeacon of Southend, said: “She has not contacted us to say I am really sorry. She has not spoken into this story at all.
“When I was in a senior position, if my organisation or department failed, it was on me. I had to take the can for it. Well, it’s now time for them to take the can.”
Bibaa, 46, and Nicole, 27, were stabbed to death by Danyal Hussein, 19, in a park in North London, on June 7, 2020.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct said Jaffer took four photos on his phone while he was on the cordon on June 8. He sent five images to Lewis, who then used an app to superimpose
his face on to one, which showed the sisters in the background.
Lewis shared photographs of the crime scene with a WhatsApp group of 42 colleagues, entitled “A Team group”.
The watchdog found Lewis and Jaffer, who has resigned, had a case to answer for gross misconduct.
In total, 13 officers were investigated for potential breaches of standards of professional behaviour, the IOPC said.
Three out of six officers who allegedly were either aware of, received or viewed the inappropriate photographs and failed to challenge or report them, also had a case to answer.
