TIM SHERWOOD believes the Europa Conference League will be new boss Antonio Conte’s first stepping stone to turning Tottenham into trophy winners.

Sherwood, who was Spurs chief between 2013 and 2014, is a big fan of the Italian (above, after winning Serie A with Juventus) and said: “I can see them winning a trophy this season.

“The Europa Conference League is there for the taking. The only other real competition in it is Roma.

“Tottenham have plenty of work to do. But they have more than enough to get the points to progress.

“With the right man in charge, they will win it, if they really go for it. It is an easier route into the Europa League for them than their league position will be. One thing

Conte guarantees you is that experience of winning. His relationship with the chairman Daniel Levy will be great, as long as the team is winning.

“I’m sure he would demand signings. Most of the clubs he has managed have spent money, then Conte has been expected to uphold his end of the bargain – to deliver trophies.

“There is nothing Tottenham want more at this moment in time than to win a trophy.

“Conte has a reputation. He is demanding and he expects everyone at a football club to be accountable. That is not a terrible thing.

“He is not an Arsene Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson, that will come in for an extended period.

“If they are talking about 18 months to two years, I can see that it could suit both Conte and Tottenham.”

Sherwood (above, inset) believes that former boss Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked by Spurs on Monday after just 17 games, never stood a chance. He added: “Anyone that knows football knows that after listening to the statement from Daniel Levy regarding attacking football, Nuno was not the right man.”

Tim Sherwood was speaking to MyBettingSites.
