Brother’s DNA led police to murderer

- BY LOUIE SMITH and TOM PETTIFOR

DAVID Fuller was arrested in connection with the Bedsit Murders after police linked DNA at a different crime scene to his brother.

The monster, 67, had escaped justice for the killings of Wendy Knell, 25, and Caroline Pierce, 20, for more than three decades.

But his home was raided after a sample given by a family member for an unrelated offence appeared on the National DNA Database.

Fuller was later proved to be a one billion to one match to DNA found in Wendy’s bedroom.

Detectives also worked with Clarks footwear archivists to identify a footprint in her blood as belonging to a Sportstrek trainer.

A search of Fuller’s family albums showed him wearing these shoes during the 70s and 80s.

Yesterday Wendy’s mum Pam spoke outside court after his conviction.

She said:

“After all these years, it’s hard to believe it’s happened. It hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s going to take a long while. We miss her.”

Tragically Wendy’s dad Bill died in 2017 without seeing justice.

In a statement the family said “it broke his heart he never found out” who had killed his daughter.

The statement added: “Hopefully we can now start to grieve and move past the pain, and remember her as the beautiful, kind, generous, caring, funny girl she was, who had a smile and kind word for everyone.”

Both Wendy and Caroline lived alone in Tunbridge Wells, Kent when they were targeted by Fuller, who may have met them while they were doing their jobs.

Fuller, who was working as an electrician in the town at the time had links to both addresses.

An entry in his diary proved he visited Buster Brown’s restaurant, where Caroline worked.

She was abducted on November 24, 1987, after getting a taxi home after a night out with friends.

Her body – naked except tights – was found 40 miles away in Romney Marshes three weeks later.

Keen photographer Fuller also developed his film with SupaSnaps.

At the time of her death on June 23, 1987, Wendy was a manageress at the local branch.

Fuller, who grew up in Hampshire, was convicted of setting fire to a shipping container at the age of 12.

He went on to carry out at least 30 “creeper-style” burglaries when he was aged between 18 and 21.
