British bangers and Bonfire Night go together like ice cream and seaside.

We love sausages in our house. In fact there was a point in The Dark Lordette’s young life when I worried she had turned into part pork product, part child as she would only eat ham rolls for lunch at school and chipolatas for tea.

She’s grown out of it now, but sausages and mash and onion gravy can almost make her smile these days.

She’s in good company, because a ground-breaking survey by mustard brand Colman’s reveals that the UK’s most popular meals are sausages and mash (50%), toad in the hole (20%) and sausage casserole (11%).

And we’re a nation of sausage addicts, with two out of every 10 homes serving them up for tea twice a week. Cumberland and

Lincolnshire sausages top the list (34% and 15% respectively), while veggie versions are firm favourites with 7%.

The expose by the mustard brand into the nation’s saucy sausage eating habits also revealed there’s nothing wurst (groan) than a naked sausage.

A whopping eight in 10 (82%) preferred their bangers with a dollop of sauce, and the condiment half of them relished most is…drum roll…lime pickle.

Ha ha! Only kidding. Obviously Colman’s discovered that half (50%) of Brits love their hearty hot dogs with a dollop of mustard.

Personally I like a mixture of English mustard and ketchup on a sizzling sausage served in a white, floury bap.

So I’m not sure which monster stuck bits of fig in the photo for this story, but I’d like to see them hunted down and tried for crimes against sausages…
