“We want a strong performance, we’ve got thousands of England fans travelling and we must put on a performance that underlines all of the facts I have just spoken about.” Southgate also revealed that he wants to build on the successes of 2021 and has got his eyes on a record of his own, which may just appeal to him as he looks to disprove the theory he is a defensive coach. He added: “The mentality has been good. That is why in 90 minutes and extra time, we haven’t been beaten. That is a record we want to keep building on.

“We have got the best defensive record in Europe, in terms of goals to games. We are fourth in terms of goals scored and chances created. It is a good challenge to try to improve on it tomorrow.”
