HIGH SCORES IN EXE FACTOR

Brown says team spirit the key to Grecians’ record

- BY MATT BAMSEY

JEVANI BROWN wants to make it impossible for future generations to match Exeter’s record-breaking exploits.

Goals from Matt Jay and Brown made it 14 league games unbeaten for the Grecians – the best run in the club’s 120-year history.

Exeter boast the longest unbeaten run in English football after going 18 games without defeat in all competitions.

Now Brown wants to continue creating history and put their impressive sequence out of reach for future Exeter players.

Grecians striker Brown, 27, said: “It’s a proud moment for all of us to be involved in setting this new record.

“It’s great to be part of and hopefully we can make the run so good that no one else will be able to beat it again. These runs don’t come around very often and you have to enjoy them.

“Ever since we lost against Leyton Orient at the start of the season, the boys have been terrific in every single game.

“If we go the rest of the season unbeaten that would be great, but at some point we may lose.

“There is a real togetherness in the squad and it is like a family here. Everyone is so closeknit and fighting for each other. We have got a real team spirit.”

Four straight wins have moved bang-in-form Exeter into the automatic promotion places as they bid to seal a return to League One following a nineyear absence.

Jay opened the scoring with his 10th league goal of the season before Brown (celebrating, above) capitalised on Benny Couto’s howler to end a 42-game goal drought in the league.

Jamie Bowden’s 25-yard late stunner could not stop Oldham slipping to level on points with rock-bottom Scunthorpe.

Brown added: “I am over the moon with the goal.

“It has been a long time coming and hopefully the first of many. It was a bit of relief and joy to be honest. I’ve not had many chances as I have been providing. But it’s something I want to add to my game.

“The gaffer was telling me to stay in the box, and it fell to me so I might have to listen to him more often from now.

“The league table is looking good and it is nice to be up there. We have our sights set on promotion and we have a really good chance.”

Oldham manager Keith Curle has vowed to drag his side out of the drop zone despite winning just one of their last seven games. Curle said: “We have played against a team that are flying high and we could have got something out of the game.

“I have been here before and it is not a nice road you are on, but you have to keep looking forward. There are enough encouraging signs and I know we will get out of it.”

It doesn’t get much easier for Curle’s men. After tomorrow’s FA Cup clash with Ipswich they host high-lying Port Vale on Saturday and then travel to promotion-chasing Northampton Town next Tuesday.
