Heroic plasterers rescue old woman from blazing home
TWO plasterers on the way back from a job ran into a blazing bungalow and rescued a frail old woman from the smoke and flames.
Matthew Simmonds, 29, and James Abbott, 30, were driving in their van when they saw the fire. A group of people had gathered outside the home and were yelling at the occupants to get out.
Firefighters had not yet arrived, so Matthew and James leapt into action.
They battled their way to the living room where they found a woman in her 90s trying to phone for help.
The plasterers got her out of the home, which was engulfed by flames minutes later.
James said: “It was black with smoke, you couldn’t see anything except the red glow from the fire.
“We could hear someone talking in the living room... then we found this frail old lady sitting on a chair. She was confused and wasn’t aware [of ] the severity of the
fire. We managed to get her out just in time, as we’d only been in there a minute or two and we could barely breathe.
“Her hair was singed and her hands all burnt and she was bleeding. It was absolutely horrible to see.” James, from Wrexham, North Wales, added: “The place has been completely destroyed. If she had been left in there two minutes longer she would be dead.”
The plasterers also helped a woman down the steps as she made her way out of the back door.
Matthew said another heroic member of the public rescued a man from the burning home.
The bungalow’s three occupants, all in their 90s, were treated in hospital.
The blaze in Pandy, near Wrexham, was started at about 4pm on Sunday by a cooking appliance, believed to be a chip pan. About 20 firefighters battled the flames through the night.

Mum-of-two Britney said she plans to start trying for another baby. She was banned from expanding her family and placed on contraceptives under the conservatorship terms.
