Tory tactics are so transparent

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

DURING campaigning for the local elections, the smear tactics used by the Tories against the Labour leadership have been very noticeable. They include demands for Durham police to investigate Keir Starmer’s so-called offence of having a meal with staff at a meeting in April 2021, despite them previously saying no further action would be taken.

It is just an attempt by the Tories to gloss over their failure to tackle the everyday issues affecting us all, such as rising fuel prices and the soaring cost of living and inflation.

Blaming the previous Labour government for all the country’s woes doesn’t wash any more as they have been in power for the past 12 years.

They are the ones to blame for our present predicament.

What astonishing good luck has come the way of the Prime Minister this week, starting with Keir Starmer’s meal break during an election event being compared to Partygate by some Tories and the right wing media. Then, lo and behold, he became the first Western leader to address Ukraine’s parliament since the start of the invasion.

All in a week when local elections are happening across the UK, in which the Tories are predicted to do badly.

And the Tories have the cheek to accuse Labour of playing party politics. Harry Bourne

What intrigues me about Partygate is not what happened, but what didn’t happen.

When Boris Johnson’s private secretary sent an email inviting so many people to bring a bottle to a garden party, he not only broke the law of the land but was encouraging others to do the same.

He also embarrassed the Prime Minister – so why didn’t Boris Johnson sack him on the spot?

Tory MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan wants Sir Keir Starmer to be reinvestigated for an alleged lockdown breach in Durham when he had a meal with his staff.

I don’t believe I heard her say anything was wrong when Dominic Cummings went to Durham back in 2020, when the country was under stricter Covid rules.

Once again, it’s not do as our party does, it’s a do as our party says attitude.

Kenneth Rheeston, Birmingham

I reckon the Tories are waiting to see how the local election results poll for them.

If they do badly due to Partygate and the cost-of-living crisis, they will drop Boris Johnson as a liability. They will only retain him if they do well.

As usual, the only thing they are worried about is their seats.

Phil Brand, South West London

What’s this latest nonsense by the Tories to save Johnson’s premiership? They will try anything. But the truth is whoever is in charge of the Conservative Party, the same incompetent policies will continue.

The sooner we get rid of this shower and elect a Labour government, the better life will be for everyone.

Jim Andrews, Grays, Essex

With today’s local elections, why have all the people involved in the No10 parties not been named, so those of us who bother to vote can decide if we’ll vote for the Tories? Of course this hasn’t happened. Colin German, Lincoln
