The Mounties get their man
Prince enjoys equestrian spectacular in Canada
THE Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were taken on a musical ride by the Canadian Mounties yesterday.
Charles and Camilla watched in awe as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police performed in front of hundreds on day two of their tour.
The future king and queen pointed and clapped at the fantastic outdoor display of synchronised dancing and riding in Ottawa.
Earlier in the day, Charles, 73, and Camilla, 74, said a prayer for peace with the Ukrainian community during a visit to a church.
After meeting a young mum who escaped the city of Lutsk in March with her two sons as Russians bombarded their hometown, Camilla told them: “We are so behind you. We do worry about you so much.”
Olha Rudenko and sons Stanislav, 16, and Lukian, nine, joined her sister Natalia in the Canada capital.
Both Charles and Camilla appeared emotional as the priest thanked Britain and the royals for helping Ukraine in their hour of need.
The Very Reverend Volodymyr Kouchnir told them at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral: “Your country is truly a friend to Ukraine. We shall never, never, never forget that.”
The royals later visited a local market where the Prince extolled the virtues of maple syrup, describing it as “good for you”. They were mobbed at Ottawa’s ByWard market, which is recovering after the pandemic.
Charles and Camilla had earlier laid a wreath in memory of Canada’s war dead at the National War Memorial. Before leaving Charles stopped to wave at the crowd of several hundred who had gathered.
Among them was Cecile Dumont, 63, who had travelled from Quebec and queued for four hours. Shaking after taking a selfie with the prince, she said: “I love him, really I do. He’s a wonderful man and our future king.”
The couple later met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a reception.
Today they fly to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories to visit an ice road community struggling with climate change.
