JOSE EYES A SPECIAL EURO WIN

EUROPA CONFERENCE FINAL ROMA v FEYENOORD, KO 8PM

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN

JOSE MOURINHO called on his Roma team to “write history” by winning the first Europa League Conference final against Feyenoord in Tirana.

And the Special One revealed he still thinks about special advice given to him by Sir Alex Ferguson as he seeks a 26th major club trophy tonight.

The Italian side are eyeing their first silverware since 2008 and their first European trophy. And the former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United aims to become the first coach to win all three current European trophies.

He said: “We’re at the end of this journey, at the end of the season.

“We played a ‘final’ at the weekend to secure Europa League football for next season, and we did it. We have written history to be in a European final, but, of course, being in a final you have to win it and write history.”

Roma finished sixth in Serie A with a 3-0 win at Torino on Sunday when England’s Tammy Abraham (top) scored twice to take his season’s tally to 17.

But the Italians, who beat Leicester in the semis, have won just two of their last eight games in all competitions and lost 6-1 to Norwegian minnows Bodo Glimt in the group stage last October.

In the build-up to the game, Mourinho (above) recalled how he was invited into Ferguson’s office at Old Trafford for a chat ahead of a Champions League clash in March 2013 during his time as Real Madrid boss and was served with a warning of what lay ahead for him.

He recalled: “I asked him, ‘What is it like, boss? Does it change? Does it change over the years?’ He said, ‘Forget about it. Nothing changes. It’s the same up until the very last day.’

“That is why I keep saying I cannot believe I am 59 years old. I cannot believe I have a 21 or 22-year career as a head coach. I cannot tell you when I am going to stop because I cannot visualise it. The passion doesn’t change.”

Mourinho added: “The ‘Special One’ story is an old story. It was when I was at the beginning. When you have more maturity and stability, you think less about yourself.

“I don’t believe in magical potions, I don’t believe in magical spells. There’s nothing special to be done, just for us to be us as a team.”
