DAVY: THE ENTIRE TOWN WILL GO CRAZY WITH A CAPITAL C

- BY DAVE CRAVEN

KEN DAVY is looking forward to a “phenomenal” weekend as Huddersfield’s big sporting clubs seek historic glory in London.

The Huddersfield Giants owner, 80, watches his side face Wigan for the Betfred Challenge Cup at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow.

And like many fans, Davy will also be at Wembley on Sunday to hopefully see Huddersfield Town win the Championship play-off final against Nottingham Forest.

It is no surprise – alongside his Giants commitments, he was also Town chairman for six years after helping drag them out of administration in 2003.

Davy (above) said: “I’m lifepresident and always want Town to do well. It’d be tremendous to see them back in the Premier League and success like that brings all kinds of benefits to the town and fans.

“It is a massive weekend for Huddersfield. It’s actually never happened before, where a rugby league club’s been in London for the Challenge Cup final, and the following day that town or city’s football club is vying for the Premier League.

“I think the whole town will be in London or with their eyes glued to TV screens.

“We’re underdogs, as are Town. But we each have a great opportunity to win. And that’s all you need.”

Although there are plenty of Town fans in the Giants’ squad, they are heading back north tomorrow night so will not be at the Championship decider. Since 1929, the Challenge Cup final has largely been played at Wembley. But the RFL and BBC wanted to bring the August date forward to the traditional May slot for 2022.

Wembley was unavailable so the cup has been switched from its spiritual home to Spurs for one year only. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was supposed to host its first rugby league game in the 2020 England v Australia Ashes series, but it was cancelled due to Covid.
