RUSSIANS swarmed into Severodonetsk in Ukraine yesterday, bombing an area sheltering hundreds of civilians.

Moscow’s troops now control about 70% of the key city and are trying to cut off around 500 locals hiding in an industrial complex — just like Mariupol.

Pro-Moscow separatists said the last bridge out of Severodonetsk was ruined and defenders must surrender or die.

Ukraine said there was another way out but the route was damaged. It issued urgent calls for Western weapons to defend Severodonetsk, which Kyiv says is a battle for control of eastern Donbas.

The wish list includes 1,000 howitzer artillery systems, 500 tanks, 2,000 armoured vehicles and 1,000 drones.

Regional governor Sergei Gadai added: ”The battles are so fierce that fighting for not just a street but for a single high-rise building can last days.”

He said it was one of the bloodiest raids since the invasion in February. Mr Gadai added: “About 500 civilians remain on the grounds of the Azot plant in Severodonetsk, 40 are children.”

Civilians trapped in the industrial site echoed the fall of Mariupol last month.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said child casualties created a lasting image of Russia.

He added: “Not Peter the Great but children injured and killed in Russian attacks.”

He referred to President Vladimir Putin’s comparison of his Blast President Zelensky invasion to the emperor’s conquest of lands from Sweden in the 18th century. So far, 288 Ukrainian children have been killed by Russians. Moscow claims it destroyed a weapons depot in Ternopil, west Ukraine. If true, it marks a fresh bid to pin down transport hubs for weapons from west to east. Last night, Ukraine claimed Russia’s troop losses are now 32,300 dead, with 1,432 tanks and 3,492 armoured personnel vehicles destroyed.
